Evaluation of two carbon sources for inducing denitrification: Batch and column experiments

چکیده
Artificial recharge improves several water quality parameters. Denitrification is a good example of water treatment process that could be achieved through artificial recharge. To improve the removal of nitrate and other emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) a reactive barrier at the bottom of an infiltration pond can be added. In the present study, the efficiency in removing nitrate of an artificial recharge system with a compost layer located in the Mediterranean area (Sant Vicenç dels Horts, Catalonia) is evaluated, as well as the feasibility of another carbon source to be used as reactive layer in the artificial recharge system planned in the Maghreb Region. We examined the effectiveness of two different materials, commercial compost and crushed palm tree leaves, in batch and column experiments. The results of batch experiments confirmed that both materials induced denitrification and the flow-through experiments showed complete nitrate removal. The isotopic fractionation of nitrogen and oxygen of dissolved nitrate was calculated for both experiments in order to provide a tool to evaluate the efficacy of the treatments in future field scale studies. © 2015 The Authors. Comparison of ethanol, methanol and succinate effects as carbon sources on effluent biological denitrification
Abstract Background: Increase of nitrate concentration in water sources is becoming a serious problem in many parts of the world. Nitrogen containing compounds released into environment can create serious problems, such as eutrophication of water sources and hazard potential to human health, because it has potency of causing methemoglubinemia disease and cancer. Between recommended methods, bi...
متن کاملEvaluation of Denitrification Rates and Mechanisms in Microcosm Experiments withSediments and Plants
Five sets of microcosm batch experiments were performed to evaluate mechanisms of nitrate removal in constructed wetlands. The study evaluated biological denitrification activity as a function of 1) electron donors carbon and sulfur 2) wetland sediment depth 3) oxygen and abiotic reactions and 4) carbon addition and attached populations from wetland bulrushes. Wetland-water-only controls amende...
متن کاملA distillery by-product as an external carbon source for enhancing denitrification in mainstream and sidestream treatment processes.
The use of fusel oil as an 'alternative' carbon source for denitrification in the mainstream and sidestream treatment processes was studied. Research comprised two kinds of batch experiments as well as acclimation of process biomass to external carbon sources. In the conventional nitrate utilization rate (NUR) measurements (one-phase experiments with non-acclimated biomass), the NUR with fusel ...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Microbial Diversity of Denitrifying Bacteria in Batch Reactor
Microbial communities in an industrial activated sludge plant may contribute to the denitrification process, but the information on the microorganisms present in denitrifying reactors is still scarce. Removal of inorganic nitrogen compounds can be accomplished by the addition of carbon sources to the biological process of denitrification. Ethanol is an economically viable alternative as a carbo...
متن کاملحذف نیترات از آب با استفاده از کنسرسیوم باکتریهای دنیتریفایر تثبیت شده بر روی کربن فعال در یک راکتور بستر شناور
Background : Nitrogen-containing ions such as nitrate and nitrite occur widely in a variety of water sources. This pollutant causes health problems such as the blue-baby syndrome, and possible formation of carcinogenic compounds in the digestive tract. Thus, removing them from water sources seems necessary. Biological denitrification is a method used in the treatment of nitrate contaminated wat...
